Last time we spoke about how to get money and we said it is by solving problems. Today we are looking at financial management and how to come out of financial problems effectively.
Genesis 2:4-5 tells us something remarkable. Please take note that God refused to water the earth until the earth had a capable manager.
“These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.”
Genesis 2:4-5 (KJV)
This reveals a powerful kingdom principle: God does not answer prayer based on a person’s needs alone, but based on a person’s capacity to manage what they are asking for.
Therefore, management is the best way to come out of financial crisis.
Definition
Financial Management involves the strategic planning, organising, and controlling of resources to accomplish a specific goal.
Let us look at some financial management skills that can help us come out of financial problems effectively.
5 Financial Management Skills
1. Learn to Ask God for Help
The first and most important financial management skill is dependence on God. Before any strategy, before any plan, seek God. He is the source of wisdom and provision.
2. Live a Budgeted Life
Ask yourself these honest questions:
- What is your daily budget?
- What is your weekly, monthly, and yearly budget?
A budget is a plan estimating income and expenses over a period of time. The Bible advises us to budget in Luke 14:28. The Bible spoke about counting the cost.
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
Luke 14:28 (KJV)
When you get a salary or make money in your business, do you make a budget to make sure the money is sufficient? Or are you living beyond your income? That is not wise.
3. Save
The Bible says in Proverbs 21:20 that only a fool spends everything. The Bible speaks a lot about saving.
“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.”
Proverbs 21:20 (KJV)
When you develop the habit of saving, three things will happen:
- You will get out of debt.
- You will have money for emergencies.
- You will have money to invest in new businesses.
Saving makes a difference.
4. Investment
How do you know a good investment? A good investment is when you are providing something people really need.
In fact, the Bible advises us to have up to seven or even eight invested businesses.
“Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.”
Ecclesiastes 11:1-2 (KJV)
Diversify. Do not put all your financial hope in one stream. God’s financial wisdom is about multiplication, not limitation.
5. Agreement
If you are married, agree. One of the biggest causes of poverty is disagreement between spouses on finances. The man has different goals, the wife has another. Amos 3:3 asks:
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
Amos 3:3 (KJV)
It does not matter who is the man or the woman, you must listen to the best idea and agree. Financial harmony in marriage produces financial progress.
Conclusion
When all these things work together – seeking help from God, budgeting, investing, saving, and agreeing, you can come out of any financial challenge.
I will end with this scripture from Philippians 4:7:
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7 (KJV)
God’s peace and wisdom are available to you. Apply these principles and watch Him bring you out.
